There’s plenty of shadows and light in the groovy new video by Stereo Christ of their song “Shadow Out Of Time.” Based on the H.P. Lovecraft story of the same name, the tune is suitably dark and broody.
Sounding something like classic Black Sabbath and Deep Purple with a special twist, the tune is from Stereo Christ’s self-titled debut album. That twist is that the band is a duo, with drummer/vocalist Moucha and bassist Doug Gluth using his fuzzed out bass guitar -with a handily equipped pedal board – to fill sonic space in unique ways.
The tune ends with the sound of sirens and a newscaster sound bite, from George A. Romero’s film Night Of The Living Dead (1968), adding a layer of retro horror show coolness to the recording. In my recent interview, Moucha and Doug explained how they enjoy telling stories and find songs a suitable vehicle to do so. Their previous video of their tune “The Dead” is based on the Romero film, and there’s a live performance of “Gigan,” a tune about the cybernetic Kaiju first presented in the classic film Godzilla Vs. Gigan (1972).
