The new song and video by Joy In Blue, titled “Sunflower” is a sparkling post punk anthem about the experience of loss within relationships. As with previous work by this band from Portsmouth in Britain, the work is the result of a songwriting collaboration between all the band members.
Lead guitarist Zachary Reynolds explains in a Messenger exchange: “’Sunflower’ is about being in any kind of relationship where you’re being outgrown and left behind. This is reflected in the juxtaposition between nature and concrete which is eluded to throughout the track….As usual, it was quite a collaborative effort. I wrote the original instrumental and Charlie, Will and Ben added their own flavors on bass, drums and vocals to make the track what it is now.”
The sound of the tune features shimmering guitars by Reynolds and guitarist/vocalist Ben Turley, pulsing, supportive bass by Charlie Howson-Janes along with big drums by Will Gibson. And while the song starts out on the mellower side of post punk, as it builds the emotional content explodes. As Reynolds explains, writing and performing the dynamic “Sunflower” involved exploring pain in what ultimately became a positive experience.
“The track was just meant to be a manifestation of the feelings resulting from being left behind by someone you’re close to, not even necessarily a romantic relationship. We tried to leave it as ambiguous as possible so that people could relate to it as much as possible. The outro to the track is very honest and writing/performing them was very cathartic.”
Joy in Blue just signed with a management company called Perspective Music and are looking to record very soon. “We’re also planning to hit the studio really early in the new year to get some new material recorded,” writes Reynolds. “We feel it’s our strongest material yet so we’re really excited about it.”
“Sunflower” was recorded at the studio of The University of Portsmouth, and produced by Connor Sweeney of the band Loathe, and is available on streaming platforms, with a video on YouTube.
