By Keith Walsh
German punk rock duo Circolo Vizioso present their rage at the war in Eastern Europe with the new single “Walls.” As is often the case with duos, the music created exceeds the sum of the elements, as Tony Scafidi (guitar, bass, drums, percussion and vocals) and Paul Geigerzaehler (violin, snare drum, and vocals) translate their emotions into powerful musical expressions. German lyrics tell a dark story rooted in European history of the 1990s, while the chorus in English tells of the personal toll of war by an observer who is helpless to change the course of history except by making music.
In my room wall’s falling down
Water drippin’ off the saucer In my room
Walls falling down, streetlights gloomin’ in the dark
In my room walls falling down
Out of the window not much to see
From “Walls” By Circolo Vizioso
“Walls” is from Circolo Vizioso’s forthcoming album Verrueckt. The first single from Verrueckt is “Choppy,” a story about about coping with disappointment after the excitement of romance. Located in Berlin, Germany, Circolo Vizioso draw inspiration from so called noise bands like Sonic Youth, as well as others who exploit the electric guitar’s potential for heavy distortion. Examples are Nirvana, Buzzcocks, and Fugazi. Verruceckt is the German word for Crazy. The album will release on March 1.
