Despite their humorous and edgy name that hints at the possibility of something offensive, the sounds of NC17 are effusive, bright and fun. Led by Yani on vocals, the Virginia-based quartet presents songs about live music, about celebrating, about friends. Their debut EP Nasty Habits is a six song set packed with energetic tunes, expertly played.

NC17 identify as ‘bubblegum punk,” and they have the melodies and beats worthy of the genre. With guitars that are hard and brash, along with driving beats from the bass and drums, the four members of NC17 crank out anthemic punk tunes with pop leanings. Yani’s voice is superb, delivering catchy melodies with style. The other members sing background as well.

NC17 features  D Rock on guitar and vocals, RyNo on bass guitar and vocals, and DURG on drums and vocals. It’s refreshing to hear music of this caliber, and it’s especially sweet that the lyrical themes, by Yani and Franklin Roberts, are designed to put music fans in a good mood.

It makes sense that the members of NC17 are friends who like to have fun together. That spirit of friendship and camaraderie shines through the EP and shows up on their debut video for “Party’s Over,” which as a cautionary tale, flips the punk rock script. Nasty Habits was recorded and mixed in four days at The Ward, in Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A. with mixing by Ricky Olson.
